| January 28, 2006 Guelph, Hardscrabble Road River Run Centre Quite possibly the first "anti-globalization activist musical," Hardscrabble Road made its world debut in October 2003 at River Run Centre. An ambitious, ground-breaking production by Guelph songwriter James Gordon, inspired by both â The Beggar's Opera" and â The Threepenny Opera," it employs song, sharp political satire, and serious dramatic commentary to tell the tale of a group of homeless people in inner-city Canada. Six main characters and an on-stage band convey an important, timely, politically-charged message with a sense of humour - entirely in song. Featuring some of the Guelph area's finest performers - including Gordon himself as the narrator - the music is a hybrid of folk, pop, jazz, rock and world beat sounds. $20/$18/ Laurie Iversen 519-763-3000 |
